Valley View House Kitchen

USA

In a house composed of a strict palette of iteratively applied and recombined materials, the kitchen design was intended to both reinforce these material selections while demonstrating the depth and breadth of their application.
Timelessness was a quality sought in this kitchen solution, so that the appliances and their relationship to the other kitchen components would cohere seamlessly to promote a spatial and textural contiguity with the rest of the house. To realize this, the relationship of appliances to cabinets was inverted so that the walnut panels of the cabinetry appear to float within a field of stainless steel. Anchored by the appliances and reinforced by the recessed linear stainless steel drawer apron, integrated linear edge pulls, toe kick and related accents.
The kitchen itself divides between the active work area defined by the zone bounded by the island and the stove wall and flanked by the refrigerator and sink. Moving south the kitchen transitions to a sitting area for family and/or guests as it transitions and resolves in the satellite cabinets serving the dining room. All of the surfaces are tied together by (local) Onandaga Limestone countertops and vertical returns.
